THE COMET

Spatřil jsem kometu oblohou letěla

I spotted a comet  streaming across the sky

chtěl jsem jí zazpívat ona mi zmizela

I wanted to sing to  it  but it left my sight

zmizela jako laň u lesa v remízku

Disappeared in a parkland as a forest hind

v očích mi zbylo jen pár žlutých penízků

In my eyes a few small  gold coins were left behind

Penízky ukryl jsem do hlíny pod dubem

I hid the coins under  an oak tree in the earth

až příště přiletí my už tu nebudem

When it flies once again  we will then not be here

my už tu nebudem ach pýcho marnivá

We will then not be here  oh so futile and proud

spatřil jsem kometu chtěl jsem jí zazpívat

I spotted a comet   and wanted to sing out

The wagons are clinking  in the stellar stations

Mister Kepler described  heavenly relations

hledal až nalezl v hvězdářských triedrech

In the stellar glasses  I found out from my search

tajemství která teď neseme na bedrech

the secret which we now  carry on our shoulders

Velká a odvěká tajemství přírody

a great and long standing  secret of creation

že jenom z člověka člověk se narodí

that only a person gives birth to a person

že kořen s větvemi ve strom se spojuje

that a root is connected  to the tree branches

krev našich nadějí vesmírem putuje

the essence of our hopes  wanders through the cosmos

Spatřil jsem kometu byla jak reliéf

I spotted a comet  as it were in relief

zpod rukou umělce který už nežije

From the hand of an artist who is now deceased

šplhal jsem do nebe chtěl jsem ji osahat

I climbed up to the sky I wanted to touch it

marnost mě vysvlékla celého donaha

My vanity had stripped  me completely naked

Jak socha Davida z bílého mramoru

As a white marble statue carved out by David

stál jsem a hleděl jsem hleděl jsem nahoru

I stood there and I searched   and I searched overhead

až příště přiletí ach pýcho marnivá

We will then not be here  oh so futile and proud

my už tu nebudem ale jiný jí zazpívá

We will then not be here   the others will sing out
